Ultralight Spinnings: Subtle Power in Your Hands

Ultralight spinning reels are light and sensitive for catching predatory fish.

Ultralight fishing catches small and medium-sized fish, usually weighing up to 2 kg. The most common fish caught with ultralight spinning are: Perch, shad, trout, groin. Targeted capture is less common pike. But it is not a rare case when a pike weighing more than 2 kg is caught while fishing for perch.

Fishing with ultralight spinning requires some experience and the ability to handle light lures.

Advantages of ultralight spinning

  • Ultralight spinning allows you to throw a very light weight bait over a long distance, under certain conditions, ultralight fishing can give good results.
  • City-based anglers fishing in high-pressure reservoirs may not always be able to catch big fish, but with ultralight spinning, they can catch smaller fish and experience a lot of positive emotions.
  • Ultralight spinning rods have high sensitivity and excellent casting accuracy, which gives you the opportunity to catch stocky predators.
  • Due to its short length, ultralight spinning is convenient for fishing in small rivers and small forest lakes and ponds.

Choice of ultralight spinning lengths

The length of the ultralight class spinning rod must match the fishing conditions. The main criterion for choosing the length of the fishing rod will be the size of the reservoir where you plan to fish.

For fishing in small rivers, the banks of which are often heavily overgrown with trees and bushes, the optimal length of spinning is from 1.6 to 1.9 meters.

For fishing in larger bodies of water: medium-sized rivers, ponds and lakes - a spinning line of 1.9 - 2.4 meters will be optimal. Ultralight spinning rods longer than 2.4 meters are not usually produced.

A universal option, suitable for most reservoirs and fishing conditions, would be a spinning rod 1.8-2.1 meters long.

Ultralight Spinning Cast Test

The test of a spinning rod by the weight of the lure refers to the manufacturer's recommendation of what weight the lure can be cast with this spinning rod. Many manufacturers classify ultralight spinning wheels with an upper weight limit of up to 7 grams. Such ultralight spinning wheels have the designation "ULTRALIGHT" or the abbreviation "UL".

With the growing popularity of ultralight fishing, two more subclasses of spinning have appeared with even lower limits, otherwise known as oatmeal:

  • "EXTRA ULTRALIGHT" (XUL) with an upper limit of up to 2 grams
  • "SUPER ULTRALIGHT" (SUL) with an upper limit of up to 3.5 grams

When it comes to the ultralight spinning test, we cannot fail to mention that many manufacturers, in order to increase sales, incorrectly indicate the lower limit of the test.

After buying a spinning rod with a lower test limit of 0.5 grams, what happens is that the spinning starts to cast a bait weighing at least 2-3 grams normally.

This problem is especially common with cheap spinning manufacturers. Don't trust what is written on the spinner. Before buying, be sure to read the reviews of fishermen on the Internet or try spinning yourself by borrowing a spinning reel from a friend (if this is possible).

Ultralight spinning handle

Ultralight spinning handles can be cork or EVA. Cork is a more classic grip material, while EVA is a more modern material. Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages. Each of them has its fans. Choose the handle from the material that you like best.

The handle can be one or several parts. Most ultralight spinners have a one-piece handle. This handle is more classic.

Reels for ultralight spinning

Ultralight spinning reels must be equipped with a suitable reel. In this way, spinning will be properly balanced and will be able to reveal its full potential.

Standard reel sizes from 1000 to 2500 are suitable. The most commonly used reel size is size 2000, which is wound with braided line 0.06 - 0.10 mm in diameter. I personally use a 2000 size coil and a .06 Daiwa J-Braid Grand x8 0.06mm line.

The weight of the coil, ideally, should not exceed 200 grams. It is desirable that the reel has a high-quality friction brake with high adjustment accuracy. Because a properly adjusted reel brake takes a lot of work in fishing.
