The Elektrėnai lagoon is the result of the construction of the Elektrėnai hydroelectric power plant, which was carried out at the beginning of the 20th century. Elektrėnai Hydroelectric Power Plant is an important energy infrastructure company in Lithuania.
Elektrėnai Lagoon is a large body of water with an area of about 12.64 km². The depth of the water body reaches over 30 meters, which provides a living environment for fish. There are 18 islands in Elektrėnai lagoon with a total area of 50.5 ha.
Elektrėnai lagoons are popular windsurfers place, because there are few forests around them, the water level is higher than in natural lakes, which causes a stronger and smoother wind over the lagoon water than in other lakes. In addition, due to the electrical activity, the ice in the Elektrėnai Lagoon melts earlier than in other larger bodies of water, and later the water temperature is several degrees higher than in the lakes.
