Eel fishing is an unusual activity, the fish itself is very similar to a snake. The fish has a unique appearance and scientists have not yet studied the eel's habits. There are only a few species in the eel family that cannot be distinguished from each other with the naked eye. Eel also called a river snake, although it is found not only in freshwater rivers, but also in seas. Let's try to find out what is the unique eel fishing and how it is carried out.

What tools are used for eel fishing?

Eel should not be underestimated. The fish moves quickly and easily maneuvers in the thickets of grasses, tangled gear easily breaks. When catching eels with a fishing rod, it is necessary to take into account this characteristic, so I would advise you to choose durable fishing rods and a thick line.

  • The rod and reel are selected based on the weight of the bait and the casting distance. 2.4-4 m rods, feeder models are often used. The tool uses a reel that should fit up to 200 meters of line. Brake efficiency and tuning flexibility are also important parameters
  • Line - 0.35-0.4 mm monofilament. The length of the leash is chosen depending on the current, it is usually used: about 10-15 cm for the first hook, 20-25 cm for the second.
  • Hooks - It is better to use inexpensive disposable options No. 4-6. Eel once hooked, the hook sinks in very deep and usually the line with the hook will need to be tied anew after each fish. Therefore, I would advise you to prepare more leashes in advance.
  • Weights. I would recommend mounting pear-shaped models with a mass of 30-50 g, depending on the speed of the current
  • Alarms. Eel fishing takes place at night, so it is difficult to observe the bait without additional rod accessories. Bells with light that are attached to the end of the fishing rod are most often used. Building alarms can also be used.

When and where to catch eels

Fish are not picky when choosing a place to live, but certain needs exist. Successful places to catch eels can be found everywhere: in flowing, stagnant water, small lakes or ponds, ponds with silt, etc.

IMPORTANT!

It is difficult to say where to catch eels, the main rule is that near the fishing spot there are potential hiding places for eels for the duration of the day: holes, bushes, fallen trees, steep banks with roots and the like. At night, the predator leaves its hiding place and swims into the seeds in search of prey.

Eel likes warmth, the most active eel fishing occurs after warming, but the highest activity is in summer. Eel is looking for food until frost. Active fishing takes place from April to October or early November. In winter, the eel, like the crucian carp or other carp fish, hides in the depths and sinks into hibernation.

What baits to use in eel fishing

Eels are not picky about food. All baits of animal origin are perfect for them:

  • A bunch of worms
  • Nocturnal worms
  • A live fry
  • Pieces of fresh fish
  • Crayfish meat
  • various insect larvae
  • leeches
  • water molluscs
  • snails or slugs

Eel fishing - TIPS

Eel is a true predator that tends to attack the bait suddenly and swallow the bait deeply. Due to the peculiarities of the structure of the mouth, it must feed on small insects and small fish, respectively, and the hooks should not be too large and strong. It is important to take hooks with an extended shank to make it easier to cast more bait.

When an eel is hooked, it is often necessary to force it out, which requires the use of powerful rods with a spare. When trying to kill it, it will quickly hide in the roots under stumps or rocks and break the line.
